I am usually reading multiple books at a time (I've got one for lunch breaks at work, one for home, an audiobook for the car, etc.), so yes, I finished quite a few other books during the six months I was intermittently reading Les Miserables.
I hate abridged books in general; to me, they "don't count" as reading a book. But if it's only the plot that interests you, then I'm sure there are abridged versions of Les Miserables that preserve the plot fine.
